How Space is Named on Campus

Facility Identifiers

Maps and Records maintains the Stanford University Facility Administration Maintenance Management System (FAMIS) Space Management database (FSM), the Facility database of Record. FSM houses official facility identifiers, names, addresses and other facility information including rooms and square footages. FSM is also the back-end database application that supports iSpace, Stanford's space inventory system. iSpace is used by space coordinators campus wide to track room utilization information.

Many department organizations rely on information in iSpace/FAMIS for on-going operational needs. Maps and Records notifies appropriate personnel of Facility related changes that may affect the University's operational systems.

Please contact HelpSU for any of the following.

Building Names

Building Names require the review of the University Architect/Planning Office and Office of Development before approval by the President. Contact the University Architect/Planning Office at 723-7773. Once names are approved, Maps and Records will be notified to update the Facilities system of record. For more information, please see Admin Guide Memo 42.4

Building Alias Names

Common building name aliases are "MEM AUD" for "Memorial Auditorium", "Terman" for "TERMAN (FREDERICK E) ENGRG CENTER." Contact us to suggest new Building name aliases for consideration in our applications including FIMS and campus-map.stanford.edu. Building Aliases allow a building to be found more easily.

Facility ID/Building Numbers (Assignments, Temporary Buildings, Construction Trailers)

A building number is assigned when the building is in construction, and stays for the life of the facility. While it is sometimes necessary to change a building's address, building IDs are not changed once assigned due to the vast amount of records associated with this identifier.

Building Addresses (Assignments, New Buildings)

Buildings are addressed by Maps and Records in coordination with the University Architect/Planning Office. Addresses are assigned by Maps and Records based on a grid established in coordination with Public Safety for the 911 system.

Room number changes

Maps and Records must be notified of all room number changes, and all remodels that affect the space configuration (walls, doors, etc.).
